SNR vs SR — what's the difference?
Every bookmaker bonus bet is either SNR (Stake Not Returned) or SR (Stake Returned). This changes how much cash you can extract.
- SNR (most common): If your free bet wins, you receive only the profit — not the stake back. A A$50 SNR free bet at 4.00 odds pays A$150, not A$200. You can extract roughly 70–80% of the bonus as cash with good odds.
- SR (stake returned): If your free bet wins, you get back the full return including stake. A A$50 SR free bet at 4.00 pays A$200. Extraction rate is 90–95% of the bonus value.
Check the T&Cs of your bookmaker offer. The phrase “bonus bet winnings only” or “free bet credited as bet credits” usually means SNR. The calculator handles both — just tap the correct tab above.
For an SNR bonus: Lay stake = Bonus × (Back odds − 1) ÷ (Lay odds − commission). For SR: Lay stake = Bonus × Back odds ÷ (Lay odds − commission). The lay stake is sized so that whether your back bet wins or loses, you receive the same guaranteed profit.
Tips for maximising extraction rate
- Use higher odds (3.00–6.00): At higher odds, the SNR penalty is smaller as a percentage — you extract more of the bonus. Avoid odds below 2.00 for bonus bets.
- Keep back and lay odds close: The tighter the spread between bookmaker odds and exchange lay odds, the higher your profit. Liquid markets (AFL, NRL, major football) tend to have the tightest spreads.
- Use Betfair's “Best Available Odds”: Before placing your lay bet, check if the exchange price matches or exceeds your bookmaker price. A back/lay of 4.00/4.05 is much better than 4.00/4.50.
- Check commission discounts: Betfair AU's standard rate is 5% but drops with higher monthly volume. Sportsbet Exchange and TopSport Exchange also offer competitive rates — update the calculator accordingly.
